Life Protection

A satisfactory fire alarm system for the protection of life should be relied upon to sound a fire alarm while sufficient time remains for the occupants to escape.

M - A system providing a Manual Alarm only. L1, L2, L3 & L4 should always include type M coverage.

L5 - Protection of a Specific Fire Safety Objective. Proposal should clearly identify the rooms covered by automatic detectors and the type used. The extent of coverage may be higher or lower than L2, L3, or L4 systems.

L4 - Protection of Principal Fire Escape Routes

1. Corridors and fire escape staircases only.
2. Top of fire stairways and each main landing.
3. Open plan areas, in which the occupants will quickly be aware of the fire, need not be protected, unless it forms part of an escape route from other areas.

L3 - Protection of Escape Routes

1. Corridors, passageways and all stairwells.
2. Rooms opening onto escape routes (rooms opening onto corridors less than 4m in length need not be protected).
3. Top of stairways and each main landing.
4. Top of vertical risers, such as lift shafts.
5. At each level within 1.5 metres of access to lift shafts or other vertical risers.

Note: Open plan areas, in which the occupants will quickly be aware of the fire, need not be protected unless it forms part of an escape route from other areas. However, a detector should be installed on the accommodation side of any door that opens into an escape route.

L2 - Specified areas where a fire could lead to a High Risk to Life e.g

1. Protection of escape routes (L3 coverage).
2. Sleeping areas without supervision.
3. Areas having a high probability of ignition which could spread to affect building occupants e.g. day accommodation, store rooms, kitchens and plant rooms.
4. Where the occupants are especially vulnerable owing to age, illness or they are unfamiliar with the building.

L1 - All rooms and areas covered with automatic detectors except the following areas, if they are low fire risk:

1. Toilets, shower rooms and bathrooms (unless a risk of arson).

2. Small cupboards less than 1 m 2 (solid floor risers can be treated as a cupboard).
3. Stairway and toilet lobbies.
4. Voids less than 800mm in height (unless the spread of fire between rooms can take place through it).
